Paperwork / Process

Pharmacists said there was too much paperwork involved in providing new services under the expanded scope of practice and that the process was onerous. This was deterring them from providing the new services.

A sample of what pharmacists said:
Pharmacists are reluctant to carry out new scope activities because of the volume of paperwork required.

We are limited by the amount of time we have. Often paper work is redundant. The criteria required is excessive and often a barrier to providing the best care possible. I do agree documentation is necessary, just not to the extent required right now.

When things are too onerous (paperwork, faxes & other regulations that exceed requirements of other professions) it is easier to not do them than to do them. The patients don’t get served.

What the NSCP will do:
Direction 4 in the NSCP’s strategic plan is to Enhance the Quality and Efficiency of Standards and Processes.

The NSCP has two major initiatives under this direction that will help address the barrier of paperwork and process:
1. Establish a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process for ongoing monitoring and revision of the practice standards.
2. Establish a process for ongoing evaluation and revision of the inspection process that includes a feedback mechanism for audit participants.
